So you decided to join me did you? Awesome! As the opening day challenge our first step is the obvious…decide on the topic for your information based content website. There are lots of things to consider when choosing your topic but let me tell you what I based my choice on.

My number one criteria…I WANT TO MAKE MONEY. If I can’t make money with it, I don’t want to have anything to do with it. I want to write about something I know REALLY well. I want to be passionate about it so that I don’t run out of things to say. I want to be knowledgeable about it so that I understand the competing industries and be able to recommend the right products that would go well with it for affiliate sales purposes. I also want to make sure that it is a subject that people wanted to know about. I want to be able to provide a solution that people would be willing to pay for. I want to be able to write some basic information on the subject so that I could give away a free report as a supporting product to entice them to come back for visits, click on affiliate products and buy my ebooks or other products. I also chose my specific subject matter based on an e-book I am already writing. It seemed like a perfect match!

The other thing I did was to use the Market Samurai software to determine if my market was viable based on keywords. If you haven’t checked out Market Samurai yet, I’ve mentioned it before and you should definitely try out their free offer to see what it can do for you. It is what I have used in the past to come up with ideas for niche content website ideas and it’s awesome. I won’t go into full details on how to use the software here because the Market Samurai website has some really great video tutorials on their website that explain it all.

Now, I’m not going to tell you my subject just yet. I’d like to hear from you on what you are going to choose as your information topic first. What are you passionate about? What do you know a lot about and just can’t shut up about?

I read several books in January about passive income including Multiple Streams of Internet Income and The Four Hour Workweek and I am definitely pumped for February. In fact I had planned on posting a February Challenge on Monday that I am hoping some of you might want to join me in, but life is busy this week and I didn’t get around to posting until this morning. So here we go for our challenge.

Creating information based websites is an obvious method for creating a passive income but in looking at my own I can definitely see a trend. I tend to ride high on it for a week or two and then I fizzle. I forget to put up banners or affiliate links, I don’t write new content and basically I just don’t use it the way I should. But this month I am motivated to do it right. I am starting from scratch with a new idea for an information website and I plan to make a blueprint of my activities for the entire month. My goal is create this new website and have it making money for me by the end of the month. Every weekday I will be doing something to make this new website work for me and I will try my best to keep up with updating it here so you can follow me on the project. After this first month and my blueprint for success is written in stone, I am going to go back into each of my current information based websites and revamp them to make them work and not just be a waste of space.

So will you join me?

Time for the month in review income report for January. I definitely slowed down on the article writing this month for eHow for a couple of reasons. First, January is a busy month for me at work. Lots of new projects come down the pipeline and that makes it hard to do anything. Second, I’m still wavering on eHow and if I will stick with it after having so many publishing issues and the UK issues happening. Third, I am working on my e-book and that has been my main concentration. That hopefully will be done by the end of February (I hope!).

So let’s take a look at what January brought!

eHow Article Writing

$15.22

Google Adsense from Niche Blogs

$2.73

e-Product from HPB

$177.00

Affiliate Products

$2.00

Total Income

$196.95

Overall, I had an increase for the month (very small one) but not bad for slacking off of pretty much everything while I concentrate on my e-book. I literally did NOTHING to earn any of this $196. February should be better!

Working with Advertising Programs and affiliate programs is a good start to creating a passive income, but I am finding more and more examples that the best way to earn a healthy passive income is to develop your own product to sell. Why sell your own product?

The income potential is much higher since you are selling a product valued at a much higher amount than the trickle of cents that come in from Ads. You could be selling one of your ebooks for $49 or you could be making a whopping $.15 from one single click on your site. You also won’t be splitting that revenue with an affiliate program (unless of course you start your own affiliate program to pay your affiliates to sell your product).

Once you put out your own product you develop a sort of “Celebrity” status among your readers. The credibility you can achieve by becoming an author of your subject lands you as an authority in the eyes of your readers.

As you sell your products you are building up not only a list of your website readers but also a list of buyers. Buyers who have bought from you once are more likely to buy from you again!

Once you have published your own product you may find opportunities start to sneak up on you landing you even more exposure to your product and your website or blog. Other blog owners may ask you to guest write on their blog or you may even be asked to reprint a portion of your book. There are lots of marketing and promotional opportunities that you might take advantage of once you publish your own product.

So what’s the point of posting this little golden nugget of information? I am in the beginning stages of putting together my first ebook myself. When I say the beginning…I mean the very beginning. I am still brainstorming ideas on what to write about but I have some pretty solid ideas. I’m going to keep updating PPI of course with progress, ideas and challenges that I might run into. So keep on the lookout and subscribe to my feed if you want to keep up to date.

I’ve mainly been trying to get some content up there and have sort of left off the promotion of the articles. I decided for the next couple of days I am going to take focus on the marketing of the articles to get traffic to them. Right now all my columns show $0 earned which isn’t very motivating so I need to get that changed if I am going to feel good about this. I thought I would also share a few of the articles I’ve currently got up there. So here they are.

I’ve recently been writing articles on ehow.com as one of many of the passive income streams I am trying out currently. I’m at 8 articles as of this second, most of which have centered around photography (a previous profession of mine). I decided to write an article on how to create a passive income for yourself and just posted it up on ehow.com today but I thought I would bring it on over here to purelypassive.com and share it with my readers here as well. You can view the article in the ehow.com format at http://www.ehow.com/how_5706189_create-passive-income-yourself.html or you can read it below….(comments either on ehow.com or on this post are always welcome).

——————————————–

Passive income (sometimes called residual income) is income that does not require you to directly work with it after creating it once. Your landlord for example, receives passive income each month from you when you rent. He bought the property once and now it works for him every single month. If you are a writer that publishes an e-book, you write the book once and sell it over and over again automatically through a website. That is another great example of passive income. There are many ways that you can earn a healthy passive income but it is important to remember that nothing ever comes free or easy. It takes hard work and dedication to see the long term benefits of a healthy passive income.

If you are ready to do the leg work, check out these passive income ideas. You can learn more about these ideas by using google.com to find details about each idea.

Building a niche website filled with informational content that will have your readers coming back for more on a daily basis is a great way to get your foot in the door of passive income. There are many possible passive income streams through Google Ads, affiliate products that you sell for a commission or even selling an e-product such as a book or a report on your niche website.

A membership site is yet another way to provide information to people who pay for it through a monthly subscription. This is a fantastic business model to follow because you are finding a customer who will purchase from you over and over again month after month. Imagine getting just 100 customers to subscribe at $10 per month. That’s $1000 extra in your pocket each month for doing nothing more than adding a few articles to your membership site.

Affiliate product sales are increasing in popularity especially among niche websites and bloggers. Affiliate programs allow you to sell a product for a company and earn a flat commission on each sale that you make. For example, if you happen to run a video game blog, you could report a review on new games being released and link to an Amazon.com affiliate page to sell that game and earn a commission from your readers that purchase it.

Informational products such as a specialized e-book and special reports are fairly quick and easy to create and require very little software to make. An average sized e-book maybe takes 1-3 weeks to write and launch but once set in motion you can make sales from your e-book 24 hours a day. Add in an affiliate program to allow others to sell your e-book and you could be looking at a goldmine.

If you have a fairly popular website, placing paid advertisements such as Google Adsense ads, can yield a small return as well (more in highly popular websites). Most of these advertising programs pay on a per-click basis and are a good add-on to any niche website or blog.

Writing articles for an online article directory such as ehow.com allows you to earn passive income based on the clicks to advertisements that your readers process on your article page. The key to making a larger amount of money is to write in quantity to have many different articles working for you. There is a helpful community of writers and readers on ehow.com that are very willing to help you make the most out of your article writing and answer any questions you run into along the way.
