How about a little New Year’s Critical Thinking?

I really like new beginnings. As 2009 comes to a close, I find that I am looking forward to 2010 more than I have any other year. Christmas is just 2 days away and I feel a sense of negativity surrounding me that I just don’t think will go away until I can jump feet first into 2010. This morning I was reading a post on another blog that I frequent and the author did a sort of New Year’s resolution post and I think maybe that’s something I need to do as well. Ah yes…resolutions. Don’t you just love to hate them? I normally don’t make New Year resolutions because I usually fail at them by the first week (especially anything to do with food) but this year, I feel a need to put these down. Call it accountability. People actually read this blog and maybe with people reading it I will feel more obliged to keep myself headed in the right direction.

So after putting some thought into this pre-Christmas blog post, I decided to start thinking about how I am going to change my life in 2010. How will I ensure that at the end of 2010 I will feel only positive things about my life? Here is my list of New Year’s resolutions to bring forth a better year for myself.

Stop being negative

I said in the opening paragraph that I feel a sense of negativity. That’s my own fault. I have a hard time thinking positively about anything. I guess it is human nature to doubt and feel bad about things. But in 2010, I am going to make a conscious effort to stop the negativity and start thinking more positive thoughts. To go along with my own positive feelings, I am going to stop letting myself be surrounded by negative people. After all, that stuff rubs off!

Focus on my goals

I tend to be the kind of person who can get side tracked pretty easily. Something new comes along and I put my current projects on hold and try out this “new thing”. Normally, that wouldn’t be such a bad thing, except I lose sight of the original goal and my unfinished projects start stacking up. How can anyone reach their goals if they never finish anything? This year I am going to be much more focused on finishing things up and reaching all of my goals.

Set some goals

Speaking of finishing goals…I really need to set them before I can finish them don’t I? A goal is more than just completing a project. What do I expect the end result to be? What’s the financial benefit I am after? Where will it take me to in the end? With all of the new projects I am working on, I am going to set some pretty strict goals for myself along with deadlines and use those goals to take care of the “focusing” mentioned above.

Maximize my passive income

I think this goes without saying, but the biggest project in my life right now (aside from being a mom) is to really dig in and start working out this whole passive income opportunity. I am just getting my feet wet and have a lot to learn about it, but with the right mentors, information and my own personal business sense, I think it will come. And 2010 is going to my year to be successful with passive income. And don’t worry…I will set a goal to determine what success means to me.

Try new things

In all the years I have been alive, I rarely make attempts to try new things. I was 32 years old before I even thought about possibly putting sushi into my mouth and now I absolutely love it! 2009 was a record year for me, trying one new thing: flying. How on earth did I ever get around before? I know there are many other things I have yet to try and I’m not going to let fear of the act or fear of failure keep me from trying new things or getting what I want.

    Hi Misty!
I just read your article about New Years Resolutions. I came across another version of “resolutions” on another blog last year and thought you might enjoy it. It is called “101 Goals in 1001 days”. It seemed much more manageable to me. I feel like I am setting myself up for success with my 101 goals list because there really isn’t any failure involved. I have about three years to accomplish all of my goals and if I don’t do one quite right, I get a do-over. You can read about it here: http://www.dayzeroproject.com/

I have some silly ones; kiss my husband once every day for a month, clean out my bathroom cabinets, read a book once a quarter (I hate reading). But I also have some more meaningful goals; volunteer at a soup kitchen, reconnect with a lost friend etc. The important thing is that these are important goals to me and by setting a time limit and/or frequency I can measure my success and cross items off the list. I have a sense of accomplishment and not of failure. Plus, I’m not limited to one year, I have a 1001 days to get it all done!

Hope this inspires you as well!

    Melissa
